Subpoena duces tecum An official order to appear in court (or at a deposition) at a specific time. Failure to obey a subpoena to appear in court is punishable as a contempt of court. Amicus curiae A friend of the court; a nonparty who interposes, with the permission of the court, and volunteers information upon some matter before the court. Sentence An order issued by a judge or magistrate commanding a sheriff, constable, or other officer to search a specified location. Liability A legal responsibility, obligation, or debt. Parol evidence Oral or verbal evidence (rather than written).
